Farm Fresh closes plant in Leola

By Andrea Isaac Adams

Leola's Farm Fresh Catfish Co. closed its doors last week on May 21, according to plant manager Devon Darnell.

"We were already slowing down, as far as production, so I don't think it was surprising. But it was disappointing," Darnell said.

The plant employed over 80 in the community and surrounding areas, and the closing is expected to be a blow to the rural region.

"It's going to affect everybody in Leola," said Tudy Dorey, owner of the fish farm in years past with husband Carlton. "We were devastated when we heard the news. This was a good employment opportunity in a small community, where many women worked ... and it will reach down far into the community, affecting the day care business and everyone on down."

Complete story details are in this week's issue of The Headlight, on sale now.
