Getting an article published: How To
It’s easy to get your article published in The Headlight, providing it meets
certain editorial guidelines. The Headlight is a newspaper for Grant County
residents and those within the Sheridan School District. All information
submitted to The Headlight should be about news or events that are directly
related to the residents of Grant County.
You can send your article by email: info@thesheridanheadlight.com
You can send your article by mail to: The Sheridan Headlight, P.O. Box 539,
Sheridan, AR 72150.
You can bring in your article to us at: 111 N. Rose Street in Sheridan.
All articles may be edited and are run on approval of the Publisher. The
Headlight reserves the right to reject or edit any article submitted for any
reason.
Articles are published on a space-available basis with consideration given
to those articles, which are time-related. Submission of an article is not
guarantee that the article will run. While we do our best to ensure that all
articles are published, it is not always possible as we receive a large
amount of information each week for consideration.
Articles MUST have a contact person for verification and clarification
purposes.
Only articles that are not advertisements will be run. Any information that
seeks to promote a profit-making organization or business will not be
published as an article.
Articles cannot include “thank you” messages. These are considered personal
advertisements.
If your article is published, we will not re-publish this article due to an
error on your behalf or simple typographical errors which do not affect the
readability of the article. Changes made to an article that has already been
printed must be paid in advance in order to be considered for
re-publication. We recommend your proof your article well as we are not
responsible for any error other than our own. Check dates carefully.
We determine the amount of space for articles each week prior to publication
based on the number of paid advertisements for that issue. We are grateful
to our advertisers and encourage you to continue your support of them.
Without advertisers, The Headlight would have to consider charging for all
submissions – so free publication of articles is sponsored by your local
businesses, which you see listed in the newspaper each week!
What kinds of pictures are
accepted?
Photographs taken by professional photographers require a written release
for publication from the photographer. The release should include the
photographer's seal or stamp on the release.
The Headlight accepts both color and black and white photographs. We
discourage the use of Polaroid-type photographs as these do not reproduce
well.
We do not accept digital images
which were previously printed out on another
computer as these do not reproduce well. We also do not accept faxed images.
We also accept digital images that can be mailed on a floppy disk, CD-Rom or
emailed to us.
Digital images which are emailed should not exceed 1.5Mb. Please be careful
when sizing your photograph for publication. If you save the image too
small, we cannot enlarge it without losing resolution. Typically 300 dpi is
fine- depending on if cropping and enlargement is required by our staff. If
you need help with your digital images, please contact the office and ask
for one of the graphics/layout artists.
No photograph that depicts violence, nudity, obscenity or other questionable
material may be accepted for print. Furthermore, photographs which are
considered questionable for any reason (i.e., border nudity) shall not be
published as The Headlight is a family-oriented publication.
Photographs may be run on a space available basis. The publisher reserves
the right to reject any photograph for any reason.
What do you charge?
Items submitted as news articles (not advertisements) are published at no
charge, as space permits. We cannot guarantee publication in any issue as we
publish items as the space becomes available and in consideration of
deadline-oriented material.
Should your article need to be published right away, please contact us for
details.
We reserve the right to edit or reject any material submitted.
Past Issues: How Do I Get One?
We maintain a small supply of back issues in our office and these issues are
available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Our staff cannot provide researching time to lookup old articles. You will
need to come in and research to locate your article or you will need to know
the specific date the article was published in order to obtain a back issue.
The Grant County Museum and the Grant County Library keep copies of The
Headlight available for those wishing to conduct research as well.
Back issues are not free. We charge 50-cents for the issue and if mailed,
the customer may pay the postage for this delivery option.
Letters to the Editor
The Sheridan Headlight welcomes your opinions.
Letters must be no more than 300 words and must be signed. Typed or emailed
letters are preferred (digital signature is acceptable).
Letters must contain a name, address and telephone number for verification
and clarification (we will not publish your telephone number unless asked to
do so).
The publisher reserves the right to edit for length, AP style, taste and
libelous material. We may also choose to reject any letter deemed libelous.
Letters to the Editor do not reflect the views of The Headlight and its
staff.
You may submit your letter online, in person or by mail.
Why do you require
personal information?
The policy of The Headlight is to verify all information submitted for
publication. We will not publish addresses and telephone numbers, but we do
publish the name of the person who is submitting the Letter to the Editor.
We no longer print any letter without providing a
verified source.
